About

We lend tools to support DIY projects, enhance self-sufficiency and build a stronger community.

Fairbanks is a community of do-it-yourselfers, from homebuilding to car repair to chicken raising. However, not everyone can afford all the tools needed for these endeavors, nor does everyone have the space to store them or even the desire to own them for infrequent or one-time use.

A tool library is just what it sounds like: a place for community members to share resources, learn from each other, and check out tools for their own projects. The sharing economy is thriving around the country, and Fairbanks is an ideal place for such a community-based operation to thrive. At the tool library, neighbors exchange ideas about their projects, maybe meeting for the first time, building individual relationships and community resiliency. Individuals gain confidence in learning new skills and helping themselves.

The Chena Tool Library is a member of the North Star Community Foundation. Donations to the library are tax-exempt.
